The origin of Chakki Chalanasana is from the Sanskrit word. It is made up of three Sanskrit words. The first word is "chakki,” which means "mill or grind." The second “chalana” means "churning or driving," and the third “asana” is posture. While practicing this asana, it appears as if you are running a mill. That is why it is called Chakki Chalanasana. Chakki Chalanasan is also known as Churning Mill Pose. In India, Chakki Chalanasana, i.e., hand-operated mills, were prevalent where women used to grind wheat.

Process of doing Chakki chalanasana

  • Sit on the floor by laying a mat.
  • Now spread both your legs in front.
  • During this, keep some distance between both feet. Simultaneously, keep the spine straight and keep both hands straight on the floor.
  • After this, spread both your hands in front and turn the palms towards your face.
  • Now bring both your hands closer and intertwine the fingers.
  • After that, take a long breath and move your body forward.
  • Now close your eyes and move your hands from right to left, i.e., in a clockwise direction.
  • Do this clockwise and then anti-clockwise.
  • Practice it for about 10 minutes or as per your capacity.

Precautions while doing Chakki chalanasana

  • Choose a clean and quiet place for yoga practice.
  • Yoga should always be practiced on an empty stomach.
  • If there is any kind of spinal problem, avoid its practice.
  • If a person has undergone surgery related to the waist, abdomen, back, and arms, then refrain from its practice in this situation.
  • People with high blood pressure should avoid doing chakki chalanasana.
  • Pregnant women should do this yoga only on the advice of their doctor.
