Jhau is an evergreen shrub and its parts (leaves, flowers, roots) have healing properties due to the presence of various components such as saponins, glycosides, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, alkaloids, steroids and many more.

Jhau is also known as Jhabuk, Tamarixdioica, Tamarix Gallica, Indian Tamarisk, Jhao, Pichul, Pakke, SiruSavukku, Aphalah, Bahugranthih, Jhavuka, Pichulah, Ciru-cavukku and Kotai-c-cavukku.

The liver-protecting properties of Jhau helps prevent liver cell damage due to antioxidants present in it. Stomach relief and digestive system strengthening is achieved through the carminative properties of Jhau. Jhau is rich in flavonoids and anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce inflammation of the spleen and liver.

Importance of Jhau in Ayurveda

Jhau has an important role in ayurveda as it helps in healing various problems. Wounds are healed properly with external use of the Jhau roots. Jhau is used to heal wounds by applying its leaves or flowers to the affected area. The antioxidants or terpenoids found in Jhau help strengthen the skin by repairing tissues. It also increases the blood supply to the affected area for faster wound healing.

Prevents fever-

The antipyretic properties of Jhau root helps treat fever. As Jhau root powder is consumed, body temperature drops and fever symptoms are reduced.

Cures Liver diseases-

Jhau helps to treat liver problems as it is packed with hepatoprotective properties. Jhau acts as a shield against free radicals, thereby preventing liver damage due to the antioxidants or flavonoids in it. For this, take 1-2gm of Jhau powder (or as directed by your doctor). Mix it with water and consume it once or twice a day.

Treats bleeding gums-

Jhau has Kashaya or Astringent properties which helps in reducing the swelling and fungus associated with bleeding gums.
