Costus, known as Kuth in Hindi is a medicinal plant that has many medicinal properties. Since ancient times, it has been used to get rid of diseases and to cure physical weakness. It is mainly beneficial in inflammation, asthma, blisters, weakness and digestive diseases. Costus is bitter to eat. It is rich in antioxidants and reduces Kapha, Pitta, Vata. It has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties due to which bacteria grow in the large intestine due to which digestive problems are removed. Due to all these qualities, it is considered the best medicine in Ayurveda.
The botanical name of Costus is Saussurea costus. This plant belongs to the Asteraceae family. This plant is found more in the Himalayan regions of India. Its root is used extensively in Ayurveda to cure many diseases of the body.
Benefits and Uses of Costus
Beneficial for asthma-
Costus is considered effective medicine for asthma and respiratory diseases, therefore, with its regular use, it is helpful in removing catarrhal (mucous) substances and phlegm present in the bronchial tubes (respiratory tubes) due to which the problem of asthma gets cured to some extent. For this, make powder of the root of the costus and take it with honey. By doing this, mucus is cleared from the lungs and the problem of asthma is removed.
Helpful in relieving cough-
As the weather changes, problems like cold, cough and fever start arising. In such a situation, the powder of linseed proves to be an effective medicine. For this, mix the powder of Costus with honey well. Now licking this mixture in the morning and evening gives benefit.
Beneficial in malaria fever-
The use of costus is helpful in reducing malarial fever. According to research done on this, the elements present in the root of costus help in reducing the symptoms of malarial fever.
Helpful in reducing inflammation-
Anti-inflammatory properties are found in the costus which reduces the swelling on any part of the body. In this way, make a decoction of the root for the swelling that occurs on the body. Now washing the affected parts with this decoction is beneficial.
For mouth ulcers-
It is beneficial in mouth ulcers, burning sensation and other oral problems. Anti-ulcer properties are found in Costus which is beneficial in mouth ulcers. For this, make a decoction of wood. Now rinse the affected part with this decoction by keeping it in the mouth for some time. This provides relief from ulcers in the mouth and all kinds of oral problems.
Beneficial in stomach related disorders-
Costus is an effective remedy for stomach related problems. These problems include abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, flatulence, vomiting, nausea, acidity etc. The nutrients present in it help in removing stomach related disorders. For this, mix the powder of the root with honey and consume it. By doing this, indigestion and many stomach related problems get relief. Apart from this, the consumption of decoction of Costus is also beneficial.
Beneficial in the treatment of gout-
It is considered useful for the treatment of gout. Its consumption provides relief from joint pain and swelling. It reduces the symptoms of arthritis by improving blood pressure. For this, making a decoction of the root of the costus and mixing small cardamom powder in it is beneficial. Along with this, massaging the affected parts with Costus oil is more beneficial.
Beneficial in skin disorders-
The use of the roots of Costus works to get rid of skin related problems. For this, mixing the powder made from the root of Costus with oil and applying it on places like ulcers and boils provides relief. Apart from this, in an earthen pot, fry the powder of Costus in oil. Now massaging the affected parts with this mixture cures all types of skin disorders. It works by purifying the blood and making the skin youthful.
Maintains the natural color of the hair-
The nutrients present in the costus maintain the natural gray and black color of the hair for a long time. For this, apply the oil made from costus on the hair. By doing this it regenerates the hair by nourishing the hair roots and prevents premature graying of hair.
Where is it found?
The native place of Costus is China and India but in India, it is found mainly in the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and in the valleys of Kashmir, up to an altitude of about 2500-3600 meters.
