Nowadays, due to the changing environment and changes in routine, most people are falling prey to arthritis. One of these is septic arthritis. Like an infection, it spreads from one part of the body to another. Mostly the problem of septic arthritis is seen in those people who have had an injury in the past, have had surgery or have had injections because through all these, the infection spreads through the blood to the joints of the body. Hence, it is also called infectious arthritis.
What is Septic Arthritis?
Septic arthritis is an infection of the joints. This infection mainly reaches the joints through injury or blood due to which problems like pain, swelling and redness in the joints start arising which affects different joints of the body. This situation is very painful for any person because during this he has to go through unbearable pain. This problem can happen to people of all ages. The main cause of septic arthritis in children is the weakening of the immune system. According to statistics, about 1 in every 1500 people in India suffers from the problem of septic arthritis.
Symptoms of Septic arthritis
Symptoms of septic arthritis are similar to those of other arthritis. Its main symptoms are joint pain, stiffness, swelling and difficulty in moving. Also, the skin of the joints turns red during septic arthritis. Usually, only one joint of the person suffering from it is affected but in severe cases, there may be problems in various joints of the body (knees, hips, etc.) due to which unbearable pain starts in the joints. The resulting infection can also lead to body reactive arthritis. Apart from this, other symptoms are also seen, which are as follows-

- Crying when moving the affected joint.
- Feeling difficulty when moving body parts.
- Restlessness
Symptoms in adults
- Difficulty or inability to move the infected joint.
- Difficulty in walking
- Chills or convulsions.
- Feeling tired or weak.
- Skin rash.
Causes of Septic Arthritis
The main cause of septic arthritis is an infection caused by bacteria when organisms called Staphylococci, Streptococci or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococci and Haemophilus influenzae enter the body. This infection occurs through any type of injury, injections, surgery and blood on the body. Apart from this, septic arthritis can also be caused by fungal or viral infections. Therefore, this disease should be treated immediately to prevent any damage to the joints and to prevent the spread of infection.
Risk factors for getting Septic arthritis
Following are some of the risk factors behind getting septic arthritis-
Problems in the joints-
Septic arthritis is more likely to occur in people who already have problems with arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, etc. Therefore, knee injuries should not be ignored and get it examined immediately.
Already taking medicines for rheumatoid arthritis-
People who are already taking medicine to cure rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to get many serious diseases like septic arthritis because these medicines also have some side effects.
Skin tenderness-
People with delicate skin are more likely to develop bacteria. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis increase the risk of septic arthritis.
Weak immune system-
The reason for having septic arthritis is also the weakening of the body's immune system. Therefore, people should exercise regularly and consume a nutritious diet that strengthens immunity.
Prevention methods for Septic arthritis
Septic arthritis can be prevented by taking certain precautions-
- Everyone should try to control their weight so that they do not get any serious disease.
- Exercise regularly.
- Take adequate rest and protect the affected organs from external pressure and any other damage.
- People should consume nutritious food in which calcium, protein should be in abundance, such as sprouted gram, soybean, lentils, green leafy vegetables, milk, etc. should be used.
- Everyone should drink a sufficient amount of water because water is equally important as the amount of calcium, protein or other substances required in the body.
- Get regular health checkups.
