What are Intestinal Worms? Know its Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies

Having worms in the stomach is common and is seen in people of all ages, from children to the elderly but it is more common in children. Eating food with dirty hands, playing in the soil or eating the soil, chewing pencil, etc. become the main cause of worms in the stomach. Apart from this, the main reason for getting stomach worms in the elderly is wrong eating habits and irregular lifestyle that has a direct effect on their digestive system. Not washing hands before eating, not eating food on time, excessive consumption of junk food due to lack of time, less or no physical activity, or coming in contact with contaminated water or animals etc. are the reasons for stomach worms. Stomach worms lead to physical discomfort and may cause symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, heaviness, loss of appetite and weight loss.
What are Stomach worms?
Stomach worms are a type of parasite that lives in the intestines of humans. Hence it is also known as an intestinal worm. A parasite is an organism that is dependent on another organism. These parasites obtain nutrition from the intestines and suck blood from the lining of the intestine. These worms can survive in the intestine but cannot reproduce. Stomach worms are injurious to human health. It is transmitted to humans by coming in contact with contaminated water and animals.
Types of Stomach worms
There are many types of stomach worms but it is mainly divided into two categories-
Tapeworm-
Tapeworms are a type of microscopic and segmented worms. It is a kind of infection that lives in the intestines of animals. Therefore, these worms enter the human body only by eating raw or undercooked meat of infected animals. When its eggs or larvae spread outside the intestines, these larvae form cysts (lesions) in the internal organs or tissues of the body which is called invasive infection. The symptoms seen in humans due to tapeworms can be easily cured but sometimes it can be quite serious and fatal if it is ignored.
Roundworm-
Roundworm is the most commonly found intestinal worm. Male and female are separate in these worms. The female species of worm lays about thousands of eggs in a day. These eggs come out with faces and contaminate water, soil, vegetables and other types of food and drink. When a healthy person consumes this food and drink, these eggs reach that person's small intestine and break there and the larvae are born which affect the small intestine, anus, genitals, vagina and other parts of the body.
Symptoms of Stomach worms
There are many symptoms of stomach worms but not all symptoms occur in only one person. These may differ from person to person and are as follows-
- Stomach pain.
- Gas, acidity and bloating in the stomach.
- Diarrhoea.
- Teeth grinding of children while sleeping at night.
- A dislike (not wanting) to eat food.
- Bad breath.
- Insomnia.
- Weakness.
- Continuos weight loss.
- Lack of blood in the body (anaemia).
- Lips turning white.
- Darkening of body colour.
- White spots on the face.
Causes of worms in the stomach
There can be many reasons behind having worms in the stomach which are mainly related to our lifestyle and food. These are-
- Due to wrong eating habits.
- Eating food with dirty hands.
- Eating uncovered food.
- Eating too many sweets and fatty food.
- Not having food at the right time.
- Indigestion (loss of appetite) when eating food.
- Consuming food contaminated by flies.
- By eating sour-sweet things in large quantities.
- Consuming more flour-rich food.
- Without physical exertion.
- Sleeping during the day.
Prevention methods for Stomach worms
- Take special care of cleanliness.
- Make sure to handwash after using the washroom.
- Use boiled water.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating food.
- Store food properly.
- Do not eat food prepared in the open.
- Do not consume contaminated and stale food.
- Eat well-cooked food.
- Do not eat raw vegetables and raw meat.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Minimize the consumption of sweet and sticky foods.
- Drink a sufficient amount of water daily.
Home remedies for Stomach worms
Carom seeds-
Mix equal amounts of carom seeds and black salt and fry them on a Tava (griddle). Now make a powder of this mixture and take half a teaspoon daily with lukewarm water. By doing this one gets rid of stomach worms.
Pomegranate peels-
Make a powder by drying the peels of pomegranate. Now taking one spoon of this powder with water in the morning and evening kills stomach worms.
Neem leaves-
Neem leaves also act as medicine for stomach worms because it has anti-bacterial properties which destroy the worms of the stomach. For this, grind neem leaves and mix honey in them and take it on an empty stomach in the morning.
Garlic chutney is good for killing stomach worms-
Consuming garlic chutney is a home remedy for stomach worms. Stomach worms are destroyed by taking rock salt mixed with garlic chutney in the morning and evening. Apart from this, mixing a teaspoon of garlic juice with a teaspoon of plain water and taking it for a few days provides benefits for stomach worms.
Tomato is beneficial-
If there are worms in the intestine, cut the tomato and mix it with rock salt and black pepper powder and consume it. By doing this, there are benefits to intestinal worms.
Consume tulsi juice-
Tulsi is also very effective for stomach worms. In this case, taking juice from basil leaves destroys stomach worms.
Papaya is Helpful-
Consumption of raw papaya is also considered good for intestinal worms. For this, take one spoon of papaya mixed with one spoon of milk and four spoons of boiled water. By doing this, the worms of the stomach die.
Powder of raw mango-
Taking the powder of raw mango kernels with curd or water regularly destroys stomach worms.
Cloves are beneficial-
Clove is also an effective remedy for intestinal worms. For this, soak clove buds in water and after filtering it, give it to children. This helps in combating stomach worms. Along with this, the discomfort in the stomach of the children also gets relief.
